Monthly Meeting– June 1, 2011

 

A.  Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:20 PM.

 

B.  Recognition of Guests – Mark Estill recognized four guests in attendance.

 

C.  Presentation – RJ Madison presented a slideshow of his Spring 2011 trip to the Andaman Islands.

 

D.  Board Member Reports

 

1.      Rita Simpson, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – Motion to accept was made by Steve Shipe, seconded by Steve Ogden. Motion carried.

2.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:  Financial Status

a.       The bank balance is $4097.08.  The May deposit was $920.50 which included $38.00 from the 50/50, $2.50 in non-wear fines, $80.00 dues/initiation fees, $500.00 in deposits for the Flower Gardens trip, and $500.00 in deposits for the Scientific Diver trip.

b.      A total of $205.00 was raised to donate to Sherry Strahla’s grandchildren’s education fund.  A “Thank You” card from Sherry was read at the meeting.

 

3.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.       A recent “call for help” from the K9 Rescue Team found four Diving Rebels to help with training the team.

b.      May 27-30, Balmorhea State Park – Twelve members attended this outing.  Steve Ogden coordinated an Underwater Checkers tournament, which Oggie won.  There was a night dive, which was the first ever for Steve Shipe and Connie Mitchell.  Attendees also enjoyed the Twilight Program and watching the stars at the local observatory.

c.       June 5, Crawfish Boil – Approximately 25 members and guests came out to enjoy the food and friendship.  There was crawfish with potatoes, corn, and onions as well as boiled shrimp and ribs, and some Door Prizes.  The event itself, along with the Silent Auction and 50/50, raised a profit of 405.61 for the club.

d.      June 25, Clear Springs Scuba Park – There are two campsites reserved for the weekend.  The entry fee is being discounted from $20 per diver to $15.  Meals will be on your own except for dinner on Saturday, where we will be having a meal share.  The club is providing chicken and hamburgers, members are asked to bring sides.

e.       July 1-4, Flower Gardens – Attendees will be asked to complete a survey tailored to this trip for Buddy purposes.  On June 9 at 6:30 PM at Arlington Scuba, there will be a meeting for a pre-dive briefing.  A block of rooms has been reserved at Candlewood Suites in Freeport for Sunday night (post-dive).  All monies are due next week to Arlington Scuba or your spot will be forfeited.

f.       June 7-16 and June 7-23, 2012, Beqa Lagoon, Fiji (Danny Bouska) – There are only four spots available and deposits are due by June 6.

g.      August 6-7, Scientific Diver Course – Aquarina Springs (Danny Bouska) – There are currently eight spots available; a $100.00 deposit is required with the balance due by the July 6th meeting.

h.      August 20-21, Blue Lagoon – we need an outing coordinator for this event.

i.        September 3-5 (Labor Day Weekend), South Padre – this was originally planned for Lake Ouachita but is now going to be S. Padre.  Connie Mitchell & Johnny Griffin are the coordinators.   There will be two dives Saturday and two dives Sunday (one of which days will be at the Texas Clipper and a rig).  If we can get a total of 16 divers, 12% of the cost will be donated back to the club.  Other attractions of interest are dolphin excursions, a bird refuge, etc.  There will not be a meal share but members are encouraged to dine together.

                       

            4.  Mark Estill, Vice President: 

a.       Membership Report & Renewals – we currently (YTD) have 84 members.

b.      Membership Cards – are all up-to-date now.

 

            5.  Sherry Hammond, Senior Board Member:

a.       Rebel Wear – July Fashion Fireworks will have new items available!  Members are asked to “model” the items they currently own.

b.      DRIFT Points – this program earns the member with the most points a free membership for the upcoming year.

 

E.  Old Business 

1.  Whirlyball – this social event with the Scubadillos will hopefully take place in July.  The delay is to allow the facility to move to their new location.

 

F.  New Business

1.      Membership Approval of Jr. Board Member Appointee – the appointment of Danny Barentine was ratified by the membership.

 

G. 50/50 Last Sales and Drawing – Becky won the cash ($55.50!) and Trevor won the snorkel.

Monthly Meeting Minutes – May 4, 2011

C.  Presentation – Tina Caron presented a slideshow of her recent trip to Beqa Lagoon, Fiji.

 

D.  Board Member Reports

 

1.      Rita Simpson, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – Motion to accept was made by Kelly Barentine, seconded by Keith Weber, motion carried.

2.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:  Financial Status

a.       The bank balance is $3272.99.  The April deposit was $1753.00 which included $54.00 from the 50/50, $3.00 in non-wear fines, $150.00 dues/initiation fees, and $136.00 from S.C.U.B.A. Bingo.  All members who signed up for the Flower Gardens trip have reimbursed the club for their trip deposit.

 

3.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.       April 15-17, Tyler State Park (Tina and Kelly) – Approximately 28 members were in attendance Saturday night.  Some of our members did dive on Saturday even though the water was cold.  There were some certification dives made as well as skills practice.  Others went to Tiger Creek as a side outing on Saturday.  A special thanks to the meal coordinators and everyone who brought food and helped make the meals wonderful.  After dinner a Washers tournament was held – Keith Weber won 1st place, Mark Stonebridge won 2nd, and Ron Herman won 3rd. 

b.      May 27-30, Balmorhea State Park (Steve Ogden) – current plans are for attendees to leave DFW Friday night, camp/dive on Saturday and Sunday at McDonald’s Observatory, and return to DFW on Monday.  A sign-up sheet was passed around, including meal coordinator information.  Oggie will contact signees with more information & details.  Carpools are going, and some are going early Friday with a trailer to facilitate the hauling of dive gear.  Please keep your gear to the basics due to space constraints.  Cooking gear will be provided, please don’t bring any unless you are specifically asked.

c.       June 5, Crawfish Boil (Jim and Rita Simpson) – Tickets are for sale at $20/person or $5/child (under 12).  There will be non-crawfish food items for the non-seafood eaters.  Steve Ogden is coordinating a Silent Auction fundraiser for the club (donations of new & gently used items are being accepted – both dive and non-dive items) and there will be a 50/50 and possibly a raffle.  The Board is considering renting a Bounce House for children’s enjoyment, if there are enough children coming.

d.      July 1-4, Flower Gardens (Tina) – this trip is full but there is a wait list if anyone else is interested. 

e.       June 7-16 and June 7-23, 2012, Beqa Lagoon, Fiji (Danny) – Dates are set at June 7-16, 2012 for the first week and June 7-21, 2012 for the extension of a two week trip.  Depart DFW on June 7, arrive Fiji on June 9.  Deposits are due by June 1, 2011 or the diver will be dropped from the trip, and the balance is due March 1, 2012.

f.       August 6-7, Scientific Diver Course (Danny) – Aquarina Springs –There are 16 spaced available; we can go on August 20-21 if we need an overflow weekend.  The cost of the course (only) is $230/pp and a $100/pp deposit is required.  See Danny for registration forms.

g.      June 25, Clear Springs – no meal shares except for Saturday dinner, please bring sides and desserts.  The park is discounting their entry fee for us, from $20 to $15/pp.

DRIFT Points – Sherry briefly explained the program, for the benefit of our new members and guests.  Emphasis was made for all members to make sure they sign in to all meetings and events attended.

50/50 Drawing and Rebel Wear Amounts – The total ticket sales for the 50/50 is $76.00, $38.00 for the winner and $38.00 for the club.

 

E.  Old Business 

1.  Scarborough Faire – Mark Stonebridge reported that approximately 6 members gathered for this outing, and everyone enjoyed the day.

2.  Lake Ouachita – Danny Bouska advised that we still need an outing co-coordinator for this event, to be held Labor Day weekend.  Please see Danny if you are interested.

 

F.  New Business

1.      Whirlyball with the Scubadillos – May 21st

After brief discussion, Jim Magnuson suggested we try to set this up for July.

C.  Presentation (30 minutes):  Steve Ogden – Spring Lake (Aquarina Springs, San Marcos) – Steve showed a video and presented on the history and purpose of Aquarina Springs

 

D.  Board Member Reports

 

1.      Rita Simpson, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – motion to accept made by Ellen Fourtin, seconded by Kelly Barentine, motion carried.

2.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:  Financial Status

a.      The bank balance is $4064.31.  There is $52.00 in new merchandise sales, and of the $144.00 in jewelry/charms sales at the Texas Dive Show, 15% ($22.00) was donated to the club.

b.      We will have a fundraiser at the April meeting, Scuba Bingo.

c.      The 2011 budget was disbursed to members.  After review and discussion, Jim Simpson moved to accept the budget; the motion was seconded by Ellen Fourtin and the motion carried.

 

3.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

2011 Outing Schedule – is posted on the website at www.divingrebels.org

                        February 25-26, Texas Dive Show, Irving Convention Center and Social

                              Great attendance, staff and visitors (2800 visitors!).  There were 150 entries into our drawing for a free tank – the winner was our own Sherry Strahla.  Entrants will be added to the email list for our monthly newsletter.

March 12-13, Arctic Dive / Wine & Cheese Festival (Steve and/or Elizabeth)

Elizabeth advised that there will be a “buy 1 get 1 free” dive package to Utopia Resort (Utila) raffled at the event; tickets are on sale now and you do not have to be present to win.  Tickets to the event are also on sale now for $10/pp and they will be $15/pp at the “door.”  Steve explained how the wine and cheese tastings will be conducted.  John advised that the diving will begin approximately 1:30 with gearing up and a 2:00 entry into the water.  The Polar Bear award will be presented to the diver in the water the longest.  Attendees are asked to bring appetizers, salads, and desserts.  There will also be a silent auction, attendees are asked to donate their quality, used dive gear that is no longer in use.      

April 15-17, Tyler State Park

The annual dive at TSP will be the weekend of April 15 – 17.  There was a discussion of meals, more will be determined at the next meeting.

May 15, Crawfish Boil (Jim and Rita Simpson)

This event will be held on June 5th.  A sign-up sheet will be passed at the next meetings (prior to 6/5) so we can get a rough headcount for purchasing the fish.

May 27-30,   Balmorhea State Park

Flower Gardens

The Fourth of July weekend was decided on for this outing.

                        Rebel Wear – Sherry reminded us that there is Rebel apparel for sale.

DRIFT Points – members were given a hand-out of the DRIFT Point structure.  End-Of-Year winner will receive a plaque and free membership for the upcoming year.

            1.  Youth Organization – nothing reported.

            2.   Educational Opportunities to Consider 

a.      There was discussion about signing up Rebel members for a 2-day class in San Marcos at Aquarina Springs.  There is a max of 15 per class, it is held twice a month, and the cost is $230/pp.  A sign-up sheet will be presented in April to determine interest level.

b.      There was discussion for coordinating an outing to Valhalla Missile Silo, where members could also obtain an Altitude certification.  The cost of the dive is on a sliding scale.

c.      Danny Bouska advised he is looking into coordinating a club trip to Fiji in 2012.

d.      Sherry Strahla’s son-in-law passed away unexpectedly in February.  The Board had previously agreed that the club would donate $50.00 in lieu of flowers to be put into Sherry’s grandchildren’s college fund.  We are also asking for individual donations, which can be directed to Sherry Hammond or to the club to disburse.  Collections will be made at both the March and April meetings.

2.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:  Financial Status

a.      The bank balance is $2316.00.  The March deposit was $1188.00 which included $901.00 income/profit (tentative) from the Arctic Dive.

 

3.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.      March 12-13, Arctic Dive / Wine & Cheese Festival (Steve Ogden) – There was good attendance at this event!  Thanks to all who attended and/or planned the event.  Special thanks to Alan and Leonard & Anneka for going early to stake out our area.  We had a Real Big Campfire!  John Richerson coordinated the diving:  there were nine divers with dives lasting as long as 43 minutes.  Alan won the Polar Bear hat (traveling trophy) for having the longest dive.  Thanks to Elizabeth Newman, Jimmy Atkinson, et al for the wonderful dinner.  The Silent Auction raised $170.00 for the club, thank you all!  The 2-for-1 trip to Utopia Village on the island of Utila, Honduras, was won by Jim Magnasun – congratulations!  And finally, there were 5 reds, 2 whites, and 4 cheeses in the wine & cheese tasting contest.  Winners will be announced in the newsletter.

b.      April 15-17, Tyler State Park (Tina and Kelly) – there will be 3 dives, 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday, coordinated.  Meals and games are planned, as is a side outing to Tiger Creek.  Bring side dishes, desserts, and chairs.

c.      May 27-30, Balmorhea State Park (Steve Ogden) – current plans are for attendees to meet for dinner on Friday night, camp/dive on Saturday and Sunday at McDonald’s Observatory, and return to DFW on Monday.  There will be the usual assortment of games during the weekend.  There is a call for trailers for this outing, to facilitate the hauling of dive gear.

f.       Fiji (Danny) – Dates are set at June 7-16, 2012 for the first week and June 7-21, 2012 for the extension of a two week trip.  Costs were quoted and a meeting scheduled for April 21, 2011 for anyone who wants more detailed information on this trip.  There are 24 spaces available and a sign-up sheet is being passed around.  Deposits are due by June 2, 2011 or the diver will be dropped from the trip.

g.      Valhalla (Danny) – 9 members have expressed interest.  The cost to reserve this trip for 20 people (minimum) is $500.00.  We need more divers to commit for this trip to happen.  Current dates are August 13-14, 2011.  This is an altitude dive, so a certification is available if desired.

h.      Scientific Diver Course (Danny) – Aquarina Springs – an email will be sent for sign-up purposes.  This will be in July or August, the class can only hold 15 divers, and the cost of the course (only) is $230/pp.

a.      Scarborough Faire (Mark Stonebridge) – an email will be sent to all members, coordinating a social outing to the Faire.

b.      Kelly Barentine thanked Mark Stonebridge on the behalf of the Barentine’s and Simpson’s for a wonderful gourmet meal at the Stonebridge home as a result of an item for auction at the 2010 Chinese Auction.  The meal was served on plates salvaged from the Andrea Doria shipwreck, retrieved by Mark himself.

c.      Doug Sheppard has a used dry suit for sale.

President: Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:15 with greetings to all members and recognition of guests.

· Danny & Jill had a slideshow of their January 2011 cruise to the Panama Canal

· The minutes from the January meeting were passed out to the members in attendance. John Richerson moved that the minutes be accepted, seconded by Jim Simpson. Motion carried.

Activities Director: Tina Caron

· Steve Ogden reported on the Jan 29-30 San Marcos River clean-up. There were 14-15 attendees; Steve won (again!) for the most trash collected. Danny Barentine won the prize for the most unusual item found – a class ring with the name inscribed; Danny is trying to find the owner to return the ring.

· The Texas Dive Show is scheduled for Feb 25-26 at the Irving Convention Center – details are in the works for going to dinner as a group after.

· The Arctic Dive/Wine & Cheese Festival at Lake Murray is now scheduled for March 12 – 13. Those who want to dive will do so at approximately 1:00. Jim Simpson donated a polar bear hat to be used as a “traveling trophy” which will be awarded to the diver who stays in the water the longest. Dinner will be served at 5:00 and the wine/cheese tasting will be after dinner. There will also be a Silent Auction which will include a raffle of a Two-For-One trip to Utila. Bring your donations for the Auction to the March 2nd meeting, Steve will organize the auction.

· Tina reported that April 15 – 17 are the dates for the outing to Tyler State Park. Our campsites are reserved but we need volunteers for meal coordination. There will be a sign-up sheet at the March meeting.

· Balmorrhea State Park is the proposed site for our May outing, potentially over Memorial Day weekend.

Social Director: Michelle Estill

· Jim Simpson proposed that we have a Crawfish Boil in April or early May. The VFW in Arlington (Post 8561) has agreed that we can do this at their facility at no cost, on a Sunday. There is a cash bar. The date is TBD.

Treasurer: Kelly Barentine

· Kelly reported that the total sales for Fall Fashion Frenzy were $951.00. The January deposit of $1059.50 brought our current bank balance to $3,302.89.

Vice President: Mark Estill

· In Mark’s absence, Danny Bouska handed out the 2011 membership cards to those in attendance.

· 2010 Drift Point Award – given to Johnny Griffin, who will receive a refund of his 2010 dues.

· Blue Water Trips (defined as “Salt Water”) – our options are open on this topic. Suggestions made include Fiji, Bonaire, Flower Gardens, South Padre, Cozumel, etc. There can be multiple trips in a year.

· Connie Mitchell provided information as to the event in Mansfield honoring Johnny Griffin’s father.
