Monthly Meeting– April 4, 2012

 

A.  Welcome –Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:22pm with greeting to guests and members.

 

B.  Recognition of Guests – Mark Estill recognized two guests in attendance.

 

C.  Speaker:  David Prichard & Lily Mak – Diving the Islands of Micronesia

      David & Lily gave a very interesting and captivating presentation.  They’ve been diving for many years and are extremely skilled at underwater photography.  The images in David’s slideshow were incredible!  Some of those images, as well as from other dive locales throughout the world, can be seen on their website at www.enchantedsea.com.

 

D.  Board Member Reports

 

1.      Rita Simpson, Secretary:   Reading of the Minutes

a.       Kelly Barentine moved that the minutes be accepted as printed, seconded by Cory Bailow.  Motion carried.

 

2.      Mark Estill, Vice President: 

a.       Membership Report – Mark reported that we currently have 83 members.

 

3.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer: 

a.       Financial Status – the deposit was $1373.00 which included $200.00 in dues and funds raised at the Arctic Dive.  A check was written to the ScubaDillos for their share of funds raised at the Silent Auction.  Our current balance is $6258.29.

b.      Restaurant of the Month – the March outing was at Up In Smoke in Keller, on the 9th.  After dinner, some of the attendees went to Tina’s house to continue visiting.  The April outing will be on the 6th at Las Molcajitas.

 

4.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.       March 24-25 – Blue Lagoon – the turnout for this event was very good with 22 people in attendance.  Approximately 16 of them went diving.  Some of Susan’s family also came:  mother Donna, son Brandon, ex-husbands Robert Banda and Hendryk Gesink.  Notes to Susan were sealed in the tank prior to placing the memorial underwater.

b.      April 13-15 – Tyler State Park – three campsites at Lakeview are reserved, with water & electricity.  All meals have coordinators.  The underwater Easter Egg Hunt will start at 2:00pm.  All attendees are responsible for their own entry fee to the park.

c.       May 20 – Crawfish Boil – tickets are $20/pp adults and $5/pp children (12 & under).  Tickets must be purchased by May 18th for Diving Rebels.  The event is also open to the Scubadillos, they must purchase tickets by the close of their May meeting so as to get the headcount to us.  There will be a 50/50 and a Silent Auction.  Steve Ogden volunteered to coordinate the Auction.

d.      May 25-28 – Stillhouse Hollow – this is Memorial Day weekend so campsites will be reserved for Friday through Monday.  Meal coordinators are needed.

e.       June 30-31 – Mid Year – the location for this outing is still to be determined.  Doug Shepard suggested Possum Kingdom, this will be taken into consideration.

 

5.      Danny Barentine, Senior Board Member: (absent)

a.       DRIFT Points – Kelly advised that there will be a tally given at the next meeting, and reminded all members that it is their responsibility to sign in at all meetings and events.

 

6.      Connie Mitchell, Junior Board Member:

a.       At the March meeting, we profited $38.00 in 50/50 sales.  Connie also reminded members again of the Restaurant of the Month outings.

 

E.  Old Business – Whirlyball – Linda Magnasun reported that this social outing will be on April 21 at 4:00pm.  The cost is $14.95 per person, and the location is in Hurst.  For those who would like to do so, the group will go to dinner after.  Danny Bouska will send an email with location details prior to the event.   

 

F.  New Business

1.  In response to the survey of our members, Danny Bouska will email a link to an online shark awareness course.  The cost of the course is $19.95 and is open to the public.

2.  Scuba Swap Meet – Danny Bouska has coordinated a swap meet which will be open to the public.  It will be held on May 19, 2012 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.  The site is yet to be determined.  Members, non-members, and dive shops are invited to “buy” a table at which they can sell anything that is scuba related.  Details will be provided via email. 

3.  Renaissance Faire – Linda Magnasun will look into discounted tickets if there are enough members interested in going.  Danny Bouska will email the members to poll for interest.

Monthly Meeting– May 2, 2012

 

A.  Welcome –Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:19pm with greeting to guests and members.

 

B.  Recognition of Guests – Mark Estill recognized there were no guests in attendance.

 

C.  Speaker:  David Prichard– Tips & Tricks for the Savvy Diver

      David’s presentation was very informative, with many tips even for the experienced traveler.  David’s website can be found at www.enchantedsea.com.

a.       Membership Report – Mark reported that we currently have 83 members.

 

3.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:  (absent)

a.       Financial Status – Danny Bouska reported that the deposit was $430.50 with a new balance of $6041.86.

 

4.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.       May 19 – 1st Annual DFW Area Scuba Gear Swap Meet – we need volunteers for the club booth.

b.      May 20 – Crawfish Boil – only 13 tickets at $20/pp adults and $5/pp children (12 & under) have been sold, we need a minimum of 7 more tickets sold by May 18 to make the event happen.  Tickets may be purchased via the club website. 

c.       May 25-28 – Stillhouse Hollow – meal coordinators are needed.  The sign-up sheet is available tonight, the locale is at Dana Creek Park in Belton, south of Temple.

d.      June 7 - Fiji

e.       June 30-31 – Mid Year – Tina is looking at Clear Springs State Park, and possible entry fee discounts.

f.       July 14-15 – Guadalupe tubing at Jellystone Park – camping & cabins will be available at Canyon Lake.  Members can pay Michelle Estill for reservations.  Bring your own linens; cabins sleep up to 10.  There will be an extra charge for tubes, etc.

g.      August 18-19 – Lake Greeson, Arkansas – expected conditions are 25 foot visibility, average depth of 60 feet.  Bring your own spear & beer!  A $50/pp deposit will be required and a sign-up sheet will be at the June meeting. 

h.      August 31-September 3 – Flower Gardens – a sign-up sheet for interest will be at the next meeting.

 

5.      Connie Mitchell, Junior Board Member:

a.       At the April meeting, we collected $10.50 in fines. 

b.      RofM – April15 was at Los Molcajetas.  May 11 will be at Istanbul Grill in Arlington, a BYOB facility.

 

E.  Old Business

1.      Member Accomplishments – a “sign-up sheet” at monthly meeting will be available for members to make note of their personal accomplishments, which will help for the end of year voting for Diver of the Year award.

2.      San Marcos & Arctic Dives – Steve Ogden is re-creating the attendance records for DRIFT points.

3.      Whirlyball – it was a great time, approximately 12 members attended, and we hope to do this again.

 

F.  New Business – Tiger Shark Scuba has a new supply of wetsuits.

Monthly Meeting– February 1, 2012

 

A.  Welcome –Danny Bouska opened the meeting with greeting to guests and members.

 

B.  Recognition of Guests – Mark Estill recognized four guests in attendance and we had three people join.

 

C.  Speaker:  Steve Ogden – “Diving in Norway”

      Steve gave an entertaining and informative slide show on diving in Norway.  He had lots of interesting show and tell items.  Everyone enjoyed his show.

 

D.  Board Member Reports

 

1.      Rita Simpson, Secretary:  (absent) Reading of the Minutes

a.       The minutes were approved and accepted.

 

2.      Mark Estill, Vice President: 

a.       Membership Report – Mark reported that we currently have 69 members.

b.      Membership Cards and Benefits – Mark passed out 2012 Airfill and Membership Cards.

 

3.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer: 

a.       Financial Status – the deposit was $295.00 giving a current balance of $5912.86. 

b.      Restaurant of the Month – Kelly turned the floor over to Connie, who spoke about the January outing and the upcoming February outing.  Danny Bouska mentioned to go to the website for more information.

c.       Kelly reported that Donna Golden, Susan Banda’s mother, sent a Thank You card to the club.

 

4.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.       January 28-29 – San Marcos River Clean Up –29 divers and 7 non-divers attended, with the non-divers giving shore support.  Scott Playle won the prize for the most trash, and Boriana won the most unusual item found prize.  It was a record setting and very memorial event.  Michelle Estill said she will bring food next year.

b.      February 25-26 – Arctic Dive/Wine & Cheese – Steve Ogden had tickets in hand for the event.  The advance price is $10 and at the event it will be $15.  The Scubadillos donated six new wetsuits to sell at the Silent Auction, with proceeds to be split between the two clubs. 

c.       March 24-25 – Blue Lagoon – We have our normal spot in the rear of Lagoon II.  Kelly shared the plaque that will be installed on a dive tank and sunk as a memorial to Susan Banda.  Also, she said to bring any notes written to Susan by the March meeting so they can be sealed up in the tank.

d.      April 13-15 – Tyler State Park – Scott & Sandra Playle are coordinating an underwater Easter Egg Hunt.

e.       Michelle Estill said she is passing around a sign-up sheet to go see the Dolphins movie at the Omni Theater on February 7 at 5:30pm, followed by dinner at Pappacito’s.  The cost of the movie is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and kids.

                 

5.      Danny Barentine, Senior Board Member:

a.       Danny reminded everyone to sign-in at meetings and events for DRIFT Point accumulation.

 

6.      Connie Mitchell, Junior Board Member:

a.       At the January meeting, we collected $51.00 in 50/50 sales and $5.00 in non-wear penalties.

Monthly Meeting– March 7, 2012

 

A.  Welcome –Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:33pm with greeting to guests and members.

 

B.  Recognition of Guests – Danny Bouska recognized five guests in attendance and we had five new members.

 

C.  Speaker:  D.A.N. Webinar – “Defining Dive Safety”

      Scott Smith, 8 years with D.A.N., presented this webinar.  It covered a variety of potential harmful issues and dive practices, as well as the benefits of proper dive practices.

a.       Kelly Barentine moved that the minutes be accepted as corrected, seconded by Jim Simpson.  Motion carried.

 

2.      Mark Estill, Vice President:  (absent)

a.       Membership Report – Danny Bouska reported that we currently have 76 members, increasing to 81 with tonight’s new members.

b.      Membership Cards and Benefits – see Connie Mitchell for  2012 Airfill and Membership Cards.

 

3.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer: 

a.       Financial Status – the deposit was $459.00 which included $422.00 in dues, giving a current balance of $5898.81.

b.      Presentation of 2012 Budget – Kelly reported that the Board approved the tentative budget at the last Board Meeting.  She presented the budget to the membership.  The numbers for 2011 are actual and for 2012 are projected.

c.       Restaurant of the Month – the February outing was at Swamp Daddy’s on the 22nd.  In March, it will be at Up In Smoke in Keller, at 7:00pm on the 9th. 

 

4.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.       February 25-26 – Arctic Dive/Wine & Cheese – Steve Ogden reported that approximately 50 people attended.  The profit for the Rebels was $807.50, from all sources. 

b.      March 24-25 – Blue Lagoon – We have our normal spot in the rear of Lagoon II.  Two campsites are reserved, or members can stay at a local hotel.  There is a sign-up sheet for this event.

c.       April 13-15 – Tyler State Park – campsites at Lakeview are reserved.  The underwater Easter Egg Hunt is still in the works.

a.       DRIFT Points – Danny explained how this program works and advised that there might possibly be second and third place winners in 2012.

b.      Rebel Wear sales – Danny has some Rebel Wear on hand for sale tonight. 

 

6.      Connie Mitchell, Junior Board Member:

a.       At the February meeting, we profited $43.00 in 50/50 sales and $4.00 in non-wear penalties.

 

F.  Old Business – Whirlyball – Jim Magnasun advised that we are looking at April 21 for this social outing, and the Scubadillos have been invited.

 

G.  New Business

1.  New flyers are in process, to update our meeting place from J.Gilligan’s to Humperdinks.

2.  John Cullen, new member and new owner of Aqua Trek Sports (formerly Surface Interval Scuba), introduced himself and invited all members to come see the new look of the store.  He also advised of Aqua Trek’s mission statement, which is to promote safe diving and water sports for the entire family.

Monthly Meeting– December 7, 2011

 

A.  Welcome –Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:22 PM.  Danny welcomed and thanked everyone for coming, and asked the membership to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of Pearl Harbor. 

 

B.  Recognition of Guests – Mark Estill recognized eight guests in attendance.

 

C.  Speaker:  Philippe Douet – “Diving in France”

Philippe gave an interesting presentation on diving in France, talking about European diving practices and culture, C-Card reciprocity between countries, and other differences between the U.S. and Europe in regards to diving.

 

D.  Board Member Reports

a.       Motion to accept was made by Kelly Barentine to accept the minutes as written, seconded by Connie Mitchell. Motion carried.

 

2.      Mark Estill, Vice President:  Membership Report

a.       We currently have 98 members.  Early Bird renewal ends today.

 

3.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer: 

a.       Financial Status – the deposit was $878.00 which included $315.00 in dues.  The current balance is $5697.37.  A check for $600.00 was sent to Donna Golden, Susan Banda’s mother, for the memorial fund to benefit Susan’s son Brandon.  Kelly reminded members of the Silent Auction of Susan’s dive gear, to be held at the Christmas Party on December 10.

b.      Corporation Status – our corporation is now reinstated.  The Registered Agent forms and fee have now been submitted to the State and is pending processing.

c.       Early Bird Membership Renewal – Early Bird renewals end tonight.  Dues payments will not be accepted at the Christmas Party.

d.      Christmas Party – Members were reminded that if he/she signed up to serve on a committee to please make sure he/she attends the party (Kelly has the details and sign-up sheets).  Danny Bouska and his dive buddies will enter the water at 2:00 PM.  Members are asked to bring a donation of toys/shoes/school supplies/etc worth at least $5.00 for Toys For The Children, in lieu of an entry fee to the party.  Members will be given a meal ticket upon entry. The Silent Auction will run until 10:00 PM.  The raffle contains approximately $1900 in process and ticket pre-sales begin tonight.  Once the first raffle ticket is pulled, there will be no more ticket sales.  Pulls will be periodic throughout the evening.  Karaoke will be available.  BYOB, including mixers.  Members are encouraged to bring appetizers, side dishes, desserts, firewood, and boxes to transport the toys.  All entries in the dessert contest must be submitted by 6:45 PM.  Members who wish to participate in the gift exchange should bring a wrapped gift of approximately $25.  Breakdown/clean-up will begin at approximately 11:30 PM.

Event coordinators are encourage to attend the Board Meeting in the month prior to his/her outing.

a.       January 28-29 – San Marcos River Clean Up – Steve Ogden is the coordinator.  A suggestion was made to go to Spring Lake the day after.

b.      February 25-26 – Arctic Dive/Wine & Cheese – possible coordinators are Steve Ogden, Gena Natho, and Elizabeth Neumann.

c.       March 24-25 – Blue Lagoon – Banda dive to place the Memorial

a.       November 50/50 tickets netted $58 each for the winner and the club.  Also, $6 was collected in non-wear fines.

H.  New Business – Restaurant of the Month Club – Connie & Kelly are coordinating this.  Once a month on a Friday night, members will meet at a (different) local restaurant.  On January 6, the restaurant will be Sopranos at Sublett & Cooper in Arlington.  Sopranos is a BYOB restaurant.  Attendance is not mandatory and these outings are not club funded, but they will be fun!
