Monthly Meeting– November 2, 2011

 

A.  Welcome –Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:24 PM.  Danny welcomed and thanked everyone for coming.

 

B.  Recognition of Guests – Mark Estill recognized five guests in attendance.

 

C.  Kelly Barentine passed sympathy cards for members to sign, for Susan Banda’s family on her passing and for the Bouska’s as they recently lost a grandson and Danny’s mother.

 

D.  Election of Board of Directors – Danny Bouska opened the floor for voting.  Ballots for the Board of Director positions were passed out and then collected by Danny Barentine.  Ballots for Diver of the Year and for the Service Award were then passed out and collected by Danny Barentine.  Danny counted the ballots during SCUBA Bingo.  Results for the Board are:  President – Danny Bouska; Vice President – Mark Estill; Treasurer – Kelly Barentine; Secretary – Rita Simpson; Activities Director – Tina Caron; Jr. Board Member – Connie Mitchell.  The Sr. Board Member will be Danny Barentine as he served as Jr. Board Member in 2011 and automatically moves up with the new year.

 

      The winners of Diver of the Year and the Service Award will be announced at the Christmas Party on December 10.

 

E.  SCUBA Bingo – Kelly gave the rules for the game, and served as the caller.  Three rounds were played.  All monies raised are to go to the Susan Banda memorial fund.

 

F.  Board Member Reports

 

1.      Rita Simpson, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes

a.       Motion to accept was made by Kelly Barentine to accept the minutes as written, seconded by Michelle Estill. Motion carried.

 

2.      Mark Estill, Vice President:  Membership Report

a.       We now have 98 members. 

 

3.      Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:  Financial Status

a.       Kelly moved to amend the budget to allow $1600.00 for raffle gifts for the Christmas Party, instead of the previously budgeted $1200.00.  Kevin Campbell seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

b.      Bank Account – the deposit was $373.50 and our current balance is $6291.33.  The current balance in the Banda memorial fund is $512.00.

c.       Early Bird Membership Renewal – Kelly advised that members who renew their membership by December 7 (either in person or postmarked) will receive a discount on their dues.  Dues payments will not be accepted at the Christmas Party.

d.      Christmas Party – the party will again be at the Richard Simpson Park Building at Lake Arlington.  Sign-up sheets were available for members to indicate that they are planning to attend the party.  This is necessary so that the Board can make sure there will be enough food.  Sign-up sheets were available for volunteers to help with the decorating and set-up (4:00 pm) and to clean the room afterwards.  Appetizers will be served at 5:00 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm.  In lieu of an entry fee, members are asked to bring a minimum donation of $5.00 of toys, clothing/shoes, school supplies, or cash for the Toys For The Children organization.  The club is providing the turkey/ham and members are asked to bring appetizers, side dishes, and/or desserts to share.  There will be a Silent Auction of Susan Banda’s dive gear, proceeds to go to her memorial funds.  There will also be a raffle, dessert contest, karaoke, and a gift exchange.  Members who want to participate in the gift exchange should bring a wrapped gift worth $20-25.00.

 

4.      Tina Caron, Activities Director: 

a.       October 22-23, Blue Lagoon, Underwater Pumpkin Carving – the winners of the carving contest are:  grand prize – Danny & Kelly Barentine; scariest – Mark Stonebridge; runners-up – Nick & Paula Boyett and Sandra Playle.

b.      November 5, Annual Chili Cook-Off – Doug advised that this event is still going to be held at the Cedar Hill State Park at Joe Pool Lake.  Exact campsite numbers are not known yet but will be posted to Facebook and our website by Friday afternoon.  There is a $5.00/pp fee to enter the park.  Members should bring their own seating.  The cut-off for turning in your chili is 4:00 PM.  This is the last official outing of 2011.

                 

5.      Sherry Hammond, Senior Board Member:

DRIFT Points – Sherry is in process of tallying the final points, including those from the last three outings.  Current standings are:  Tina Caron, Kelly Barentine, Steve Ogden, Danny Barentine, and Johnny Griffin.

 

6.      Danny Barentine, Junior Board Member:

a.       50/50 tickets were sold before and during the meeting.

 

G.  Old Business

1.   Jimmy Atkinson, Diving Rebels member and co-founder of Toys For The Children, reported on what his organization does.  Founded in 1997, TFTC has distributed donations of more than $28,000 as well as toys, dental hygiene items, shoes/clothing, etc. to children in 16 countries.  TFTC has a trip to Costa Rica planned for December 10 – 17, 2011 to pass out toys; anyone who would like to join this expedition is more than welcome to do so.  Jimmy also sold raffle tickets, proceeds to benefit TFTC.  Prizes include dive gear, a one week trip to Roatan, etc.

 

2.  Doug Shepard advised that although there is not a dive shop on site at Possum Kingdom any more, the lake is still diveable.
