Monthly Meeting– April 2, 2014

 

  1. Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:25 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 42 people were in attendance.  Danny Bouska asked for a moment of silence for the active shooter situation at Ft. Hood that afternoon.
  1. Recognition of Guests – Danny Barentine recognized five guests in attendance:  Jim House, Dan and Anna Bertock, Amanda Taylor and Heather Perez.
  1. Newsletter Questions – Kevin Schuck asked 5 questions with answers contained within the April Newsletter.  A 50/50 raffle ticket was awarded to the first person with the correct answer to each question.
  1. Newsletter Secret Phrase:  James Taylor won with his entry of “Ability will never catch up with the demand for it.” by Malcolm Forbes.
  1. Danny Bouska presented information on the Sunscape Resort and Diving in Curacao.  Danny indicated that he will be putting together a package to this location for October 4-11, 2014.  More information will be presented at the next member meeting.
  1. Board Member Reports
    1. Sandra Playle, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – Scott Playle moved that the minutes be accepted as presented, seconded by Jay Delmar.  Motion carried.
    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President:
  1. i.     Membership Report - Danny Barentine reported that we currently have 82 members, with Michelle Jenkins being our newest member to join.
  1. ii.     Danny indicated that membership and air fill cards are available to members, and asked that members pick them up after the meeting if they have not already done so.
  1. iii.     Danny also reminded everyone to please review/update their profile information that is currently on file with the club.
  1. iv.     Danny also reminded everyone to please thank and support the dive clubs that sponsor us.
    1. Kevin Schuck, Treasurer:
  1. i.     Financial Status – Kevin made a deposit of $342.00, which includes $205 in dues (1 new member and 6 renewals), $42.50 in 50/50 sales, $4.50 in non-wear fines, and $90 in proceeds from scuba bingo from the last meeting.  The new balance is $6,146.59.
  1. ii.     Kevin talked about the new program for Chase Quick Pay that will be piloted by the club for dues payments.  People may register online to the Chase application, and send dues to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  More information will be coming next month in the newsletter and on the website.
    1. Activities:
  1. i.     Scott Playle talked briefly about the roles and responsibilities of the outing and meal coordinators.  More detailed information was published in the March newsletter.
  1. ii.     March 22-23 – Blue Lagoon – Scott Playle provided a brief report about this outing.  Nine people showed up in spite of the rain, and we had some very clear water for diving.  We cleaned up the Susan Banda memorial, and most people went out for a night dive Saturday night.
  1. iii.     April 11-13 – Tyler State Park – Kelly Barentine provided information on the upcoming outing to Tyler State Park.  Three campsites are reserved in the Lakeview area, and she will post the actual site numbers on Facebook as well as the bulletin board at the park.  They are planning on a scavenger hunt that will be both underwater and on dry land.  The meal share will be divided among all of the people who attend and eat, even if it is only one meal.  This will include the campsites.  Kids and pets are welcome, and Kelly asked that people bring some wood for the campfire.  The fee is $7/person/day.  Kelly still needs meal coordinators for Saturday breakfast and lunch, and Sunday breakfast.
  1. iv.     May 3 – Swap Meet – Danny Bouska indicated that detailed information is on the table in the back.  Folks need to fill out a registration form if they want to swap/sell gear, even if they are a club member.  Danny has published an ad on Craig’s list.  Danny needs help Friday and Saturday, and there is a sign-up sheet on the back table.
  1. v.     May 23-26 (Memorial Day) – Balmorhea State Park – Steve Ogden is coordinating and indicated that there are sign-up sheets in the back if people plan to attend.  This is approximately a 7 hour drive, and there will be an underwater checkers tournament, along with a chance to see several species of fish that are only found in Balmorhea.  There is a dive shop in the area for air fills.  Tina Caron is planning on doing some night photography in the area, and there is generally a party up at the observatory.  Balmorhea is at 3500 feet altitude, and is on central time.  More information will be coming next month.
  1. vi.     June 28-July 5 – Utopia in Utila, Honduras – Danny Bouska indicated that 12 people have signed up so far, and there is more information in the back.
  1. vii.     August – Lake Murray – Scott Playle is still looking for someone to coordinate this outing.
  1. viii.     August 30-Sept 1 (Labor Day) – Mammoth Lake and Gulf Oil Rig Dive – Scott Playle indicated that he needs a non-refundable deposit of $150/person in order to reserve the boat for the Sunday dive.
    1. Kelly Barentine and Tina Caron, Social Committee:
  1. i.     Kelly provided a report on the March social outing to the UTA Planetarium and Olenjacks Grill.  11 people showed up, and everyone had a good time.  Plans are currently being made for the social outing in June.
  1. ii.     Kelly indicated that the April restaurant of the month will be on Friday in Bedford for tex-mex food.  A full bar is provided by this restaurant, and folks will be meeting at 7:00 p.m.  Kelly asked that people RSVP so that everyone can sit together.
    1. Becky Marak, Senior Board Member – Becky announced that she has placed an order for new member t-shirts, as well as items for the upcoming fashion frenzy.  Becky reminded everyone to bring their checkbook to the May member meeting.
    2. Mark Stonebridge, Junior Board Member:  Mark indicated he had collected $42.50 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $4.50 in Rebel non-wear fines.  Mark made a last-call for raffle tickets.

    1. Danny Bouska indicated he was having issues getting the photos published on the website.
  1. 50/50 Drawing:

Kevin Campbell won the first drawing elected to take the cash of $55.

Jay Delmar won the second drawing for the $15 gift certificate to Arlington Scuba.
