Diving Rebels Scuba Club

Monthly Meeting– August 7, 2013

  1. Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:23 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 40 people were in attendance.
  1. Recognition of Guests and New Members – Danny Bouska recognized seven guests in attendance:  Robert, Danny Hoffman, Darrell, Rhonda, Penny, Pam and Trenton.  Dale is our newest member, bringing our membership total to 90.
  1. Newsletter Questions – Kelly Barentine asked 5 questions with answers contained within the August Newsletter.  A 50/50 raffle ticket was awarded to the first person with the correct answer to each question.
  1. The club played three games of scuba bingo.  Becky Marak won $15 for the first game.  Kevin Schuck won $25 for the second game.  Connie Mitchell and Sherrie Campbell split $35 and a weekend at Jim and Rita Simpson’s cabin for the third game.  The club made $104 from this fundraiser.
  1. Newsletter Secret Phrase:  Kelly Barentine won with her entry of “It’s always too early to quit.”
  1. Board Member Reports
    1. Sandra Playle, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – Mark Estill moved that the minutes be accepted as presented, seconded by Jill Bouska.  Motion carried.
    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President (absent):  Membership Report – Danny Bouska reported that we have 90 members in the club.
    3. Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:

i.     Financial Status – Kelly reported that she made a deposit in July of $410.00, which included $214 from the Mid-Year raffle, $133 in dues, $10 in donations, $50 in 50/50 raffle ticket sales, and $3.00 in non-wear fines.  Our new balance is $5,134.90.

ii.     July Restaurant of the Month – This was held at Blue Mint Thai in Mansfield.  27 people attended.  The food was good, although the service was spotty, and the gratuity policy was questionable.

iii.     August Restaurant of the Month – Kelly indicated that this would be held on Friday 8/9 at 7:00 p.m. at Las Molcajetes in Ft. Worth.  The restaurant has a full bar, and people are encouraged to RSVP to Kelly or Connie.

iv.     Kelly asked the club to approve a budget amendment for $450 for prizes for the photo contest.  The prizes will be $150 grand prize for the video contest, $150 grand prize for the still photo contest (combination of land and underwater), and 6 first prizes of $25 each for the various categories in the still photo contest for land and underwater.  Jill Bouska moved that the club approve the budget amendment for $450, and this was seconded by Scott Playle.  The motion carried.  The photo contest will be judged by the Dallas Underwater Photography Society.

    1. Activities:

i.     July 26-28 – Tubing on the Guadalupe River – Michelle Estill said that 22 people attended, 18 of which stayed in the cabins.  Everyone had a good time.  Steve Ogden indicated that 4 people dove Spring Lake on Saturday, and 5 people dove on Sunday.  Steve had a nice encounter with a snapping turtle, and is hopeful that they will begin offering Scientific Diver classes again soon.

ii.     August 9-11 – Lake Greeson, Murfreesboro, AR – this has been cancelled.

iii.     August 24-25 – Lake Murray, OK – since the outing to Lake Greeson has been cancelled, the club is doing a last-minute outing to Lake Murray.  Connie Mitchell and Sandra Playle will coordinate.  A sign-up sheet is in the back, and information will go out via email and the web site.

iv.     August 31 – September 2 – Outing to Garner State Park.  Connie Mitchell indicated she has 3 campsites reserved, with water and electricity.  13 people have signed up so far.  Connie recommends that you bring whatever you need since any shopping in town is pretty far away.  Also, she reminded people to get the gate code if they are arriving late on Friday.

v.     September 18-28 – Curacao/Bonaire – Danny Bouska indicated that 20 people are attending, 13 of which will do both Curacao and Bonaire.

vi.     October 19-20 – Blue Lagoon for Underwater Pumpkin Carving

vii.     November 9 – Chili Cook-off

    1. Becky Marak, Junior Board Member:  Becky indicated she had collected $50 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $3.00 in Rebel non-wear fines.  Becky made a last call for raffle tickets.
    2. Connie Mitchell, Senior Board Member (absent):  No rebel wear was sold last month.

  1. 50/50 Drawing:

Brian Neal won the first drawing elected to take the cash of $65.50

Kelly Barentine won the second drawing for the magnetic dive flag emblem.
