Diving Rebels Scuba Club

Monthly Meeting– June 5, 2013

  1. Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:25 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 40 people were in attendance.
  1. Newsletter Questions – Kelly Barentine asked 5 questions with answers contained within the June Newsletter.  A 50/50 raffle ticket was awarded to the first person with the correct answer to each question.
  1. Recognition of Guests and New Members – Danny Barentine recognized that there were four guests in attendance – Karen Kusler, Mindi Fisher, Janice White, Michelle Treanor.  Danny also welcomed seven new members – Lisa Atkinson, Allen Bothwell, Jay and Rita Delmar, Bill Parker, Jonathan Brandenburg, Mikko Harkonen.
  1. Presentation:  Gary Gressett presented information on Rebreathers.
  1. Board Member Reports
    1. Sandra Playle, Secretary (absent):  Reading of the Minutes – Kelly Barentine moved that the minutes be accepted as presented, seconded by Mark Estill.  Motion carried.
    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President:  Membership Report – Danny reported that we have 83 members in the club.
    3. Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:

i.     Financial Status – Kelly reported that she made a deposit in May of $131.50, which included $72 from Scuba Bingo last month, $56 in 50/50 raffle ticket sales, and $3.50 in non-wear fines.  Our new balance is $6,207.66.

ii.     May Restaurant of the Month – This was held at Prince Lebanese in Arlington, with 8 people attending.  The food was very tasty, and was mentioned on the Food Network.

iii.     June Restaurant of the Month – Kelly indicated that this would be held on Friday 6/7 at 7:00 p.m. at Smokey’s BBQ in Ft. Worth.  This restaurant provided the chicken for the Lake Murray outing in February, 2013.  The restaurant does not serve alcohol, so you are encouraged to bring your own.  The back room is reserved, so please RSVP to Kelly or Connie.  Still need recommendations for Restaurant of the Month for July.

    1. Activities:

i.     June 22-23 – Mid-Year outing at Clear Springs Scuba Park – Danny reported that Clear Springs is discounting our entry fees by $5/person on Saturday.  The club will be catering in BBQ, but is asking members to provide snacks, side dishes and desserts.  The meal will be served around 3:00 p.m.  Raffle tickets will go on sale tonight after the 50/50 drawing.  3 camp sites have been reserved, and a navigation competition will be held.

ii.     July 26-28 – Tubing on the Guadalupe River – Michelle Estill has reserved 2 cabins that will hold 10 people each at Jellystone Canyon Creek Park.  The cost will depend upon participation, and Michelle would like a $20 deposit per person.  10 people have currently paid.  The club will be providing food Friday night, and will be going out to dinner on Saturday.  A sign-up sheet is available.

iii.     August 9-11 – Lake Greeson, Murfreesboro, AR – Rita Simpson reported that this event will be similar to last year, and she is requesting that all people sign up by July 27.  A deposit of $25/person will be required.

iv.     August 31 – September 2 – Connie mentioned that we will be going to Garner State Park near Uvalde, TX.  Campsites are reserved in the new area.  Please refer to the article in the newsletter for details.  Need to further discuss meals.

v.     September 18-28 – Curacao/Bonaire – Danny Bouska indicated that the trip is firm with 17 currently attending, and that 11 additional spots are still available.  13 people are going to both islands, with 4 only going to Bonaire.  Danny indicated there is lots of shore diving marked by yellow stones.  Lots of juvenile fish are to be seen, and boat diving is available at additional cost.

vi.     October 19-20 – Blue Lagoon for Underwater Pumpkin Carving

vii.     November 9 – Chili Cookoff

viii.     December 7 – Christmas Party

    1. Becky Marak, Junior Board Member:  Becky indicated she had collected $56 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $3.50 in Rebel non-wear fines.  Becky made a last call for raffle tickets.
    2. Connie Mitchell, Senior Board Member:

i.     Connie indicated that she had sold $390 in rebel wear during the fashion frenzy last month.

ii.     Connie handed out all but 1 person’s order.  Additional merchandise is still available.

  1. Old Business:
    1. Danny Bouska apologized about the NTSRA Fun Dive.  We had a great turnout with lots of attendees from many clubs, except NTSRA was absent.  However, everyone had a very good time.  Danny discussed with other clubs about putting together a North Texas Dive Club Fun Day.
    2. A question was raised about the Swap Meet.  Danny indicated that we could not find a location in May, but we can possibly look for other locations in the October timeframe.
    3. Danny Bouska indicated he would possibly offer PADI EFR (Emergency / First Responder) in July.  A sign-up sheet is in the back.
  1. New Business:
    1. Steve Ogden indicated that Spring Lake is now open for selected participants.  We might be able to dive this in conjunction with the July Tubing outing, but you must be Scientific Diver Certified already.
    2. Danny Bouska discussed making a donation to the Red Cross Tornado Relief Fund.  Jim Magnuson made a motion to amend the budget by $500 for this purpose.  Mark Estill seconded.  Motion carried.  The club still has $200 available for a water conservation related charity.
    3. Danny Bouska mentioned that Aqua Trek will be going to Reveille Park on July 20-21.  This is not an official club outing, but please see Danny if interested.
  1. 50/50 Drawing:

Gary Gressett won the first drawing, and elected to donate the cash of $60.50 to the Red Cross.

Steve Ogden won the second drawing for the Humperdinks gift card.
