Diving Rebels Scuba Club

Monthly Meeting– May 1, 2013

  1. Welcome – Danny Bouska opened the meeting at 7:22 PM with a welcome to guests and members.  Approximately 31 people were in attendance.
  1. Recognition of Guests and New Members – Danny Barentine recognized that there were two guests in attendance – Lisa and Michelle.
  1. Newsletter Questions – Kelly Barentine asked 5 questions with answers contained within the May Newsletter.  A 50/50 raffle ticket was awarded to the first person with the correct answer to each question.
  1. Scuba Bingo:  We played 3 games, and the following people won and received a prize:
    1. Game 1 – Susan Baker
    2. Game 2 – Ron Hyatt
    3. Game 3 – Danye Fisher
  1. Board Member Reports
    1. Sandra Playle, Secretary:  Reading of the Minutes – Mark Estill moved that the minutes be accepted as presented, seconded by Connie Mitchell.  Motion carried.
    2. Danny Barentine, Vice President:  Membership Report – Danny reported that we have 74 members in the club.
    3. Kelly Barentine, Treasurer:

i.     Financial Status – Kelly reported that she made a deposit in April of $843.50, which included $40 in new member fees, $180 from the Meal Share for the Tyler Trip, $500 refund of the deposit from the Cozumel trip, $58 in merchandise sales, $58 in 50/50 raffle ticket sales, and $7.50 in non-wear fines.  Our new balance is $6,091.16.  Kelly also indicated that she received a reimbursement for the pool reservation from the March outing that was cancelled.

ii.     April Restaurant of the Month – This was held on a Saturday at the Flying Fish in Ft. Worth so that it could be in conjunction with the social outing to see Titanica at the Omni.  22 people attended the restaurant of the month.

iii.     May Restaurant of the Month – Kelly indicated that this would be held on Friday 5/3 at 7:00 p.m. at Prince Lebanese in Arlington.  This restaurant does not serve alcohol but allows patrons to bring their own.

    1. Activities:

i.     May 19 – Crawfish Boil – Rita Simpson reported that this event begins at 2:00p.m.  Tickets are $20 for adults, and $5 for children under 12, and may be purchased at the door.  There will be crawfish, fajitas, fixings, and a cash bar.

ii.     May 25-27 – Athens Scuba Park – Danny Bouska indicated that we will be meeting here for Memorial Day.  A treasure hunt is being sponsored by Athens Scuba Park on Sunday, May 26 at 11:00 a.m., with a briefing/orientation at 10:30.  The entrance fee is $20/day, and camping is $5/day.

iii.     June 22-23 – Mid-Year outing at Clear Springs Scuba Park – Danny reported that Clear Springs is discounting our entry fees to $15/person.  Camp sites have been reserved, and we will be having a navigation contest within the club.

iv.     July 26-28 – Tubing on the Guadalupe River – Michelle Estill has reserved 2 cabins that will hold 10 people each.  The cost will depend upon participation, and Michelle would like a $20 deposit per person.  A sign-up sheet is available.

v.     August 9-11 – Lake Greeson, Murfreesboro, AR – Rita Simpson reported that this event will be similar to last year, and she is requesting that all people sign up by July 27.  A deposit of $25/person will be required.  Rita indicated that she and Jim will host a fish fry on Saturday night at their cabin.

vi.     August 31 – September 2 – Tina Caron mentioned that we will be going to Garner State Park near Uvalde, TX.

vii.     September 18-28 – Curacao/Bonaire – Danny Bouska indicated that the trip is firm, and that additional spots are still available.

viii.     Danny Bouska reported that the Grapevine Mills Aquarium is opening to divers.  Brian Neal is working to get the Diving Rebels access to dive in the aquarium.

ix.     Danny Bouska provided some information on Dive Around Texas.  It started in November, and requires 12 dives at 4 different locations.  Divers must get their log book stamped for each dive to count.  Divers may sign up at their local dive shop, pay their fee and receive their t-shirt.

x.     Danny Bouska provided information on, which is an underwater treasure hunt with a $1,000 prize.  It is part of Dive Around Texas, and requires you to find 5 hidden treasure chests and deposit your numbered tag in each chest.  More information can be found at

xi.     Danny Bouska also mentioned the Trashy Diver Contest, which begins June 1, and ends November 30.  More information can be found on our Diving Rebel Website.

    1. Becky Marak, Junior Board Member:  Becky indicated she had collected $58 last month for our 50/50 Raffle, along with $7.50 in Rebel non-wear fines.  Becky made a last call for raffle tickets.
    2. Connie Mitchell, Senior Board Member:

i.     Connie indicated that she had sold $58 in rebel wear last month.

ii.     Connie presented selected merchandise in a Fashion Frenzy.  She was taking orders, with a deposit, for items from members, based upon colors and sizes in the catalog.

  1. Old Business:  None was presented.
  1. New Business:
    1. Danny Bouska asked for interest in an Emergency/First Response class.  A sign-up sheet was available, with cost/location TBD.  This certification is good for 2 years.
    2. Tina Caron has completed her Dive Master certification, and will be working on her Underwater Photography Instructor class.
    3. Kelly Barentine announced that the club had made $72 in Scuba Bingo this night.
  1. 50/50 Drawing:

Scott Playle won the first drawing, and elected to take the cash of $56.

Rita Simpson won the second drawing for the Humperdinks gift card.
